 Case Study

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado is trailblazing this innovative initiative to grow produce on-site for animals.

CMZ launched their Freight Farm in 2022 and have since been growing a wide variety of leafy green vegetables and herbs for animal diets and enrichment. This year alone they have grown varieties of lettuce and kale, collard greens, dandelion greens, basil, dill, catnip, chard, beet greens, parsley and even willow shoots!

After evaluating the lettuce varieties grown in the winter and spring, the horticulture team was tasked with growing as much lettuce as possible during the summer to supply the zoo's giraffe feeding experience. Between Memorial day and Labor Day, CMZ has produced over 2,400 lbs of lettuce sold as giraffe treats and used in various diets around the zoo.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will be moving their container farms to the entrance of the zoo and receiving two more Freight Farm containers which will be in operation before the 2024 busy summer season.

Guests can see the new and original shipping container farms near the play hills, across from the Grizzly Grill, at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
